Virat Kohli came into the limelight in 2008, when he became the second Indian captain to lead his team to glory in the Under 19 Cricket World Cup. The first being Mohammad Kaif in 2000. Ever since that tournament, Kohli has not looked back and has worked very hard to achieve the fame that he has today. Kohli in a very young career of his has managed to get quite a lot of runs and even has some of the records to his name. He is the first captain to clean sweep Sri Lanka at their home turf, and also is the fastest player to reach the 15,000 run mark. Adding to this he equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries against the Islanders. And the list would go on and on. The Indian captain is a household name today and is also the face of modern Indian sports. Interestingly, there were five other players who made their ODI debuts in the same year but failed to make an impact. Here is the list: (BCCI)
1) Manoj Tiwary: An aggressive right-handed batsman and often compared to his batting idol Kevin Pietersen in the domestic circuit, Manoj Tiwary is one of India's most consistent performers in domestic cricket. Playing for the state of Bengal, he quickly rose up the ranks by reaching 1000 runs in just 14 games. Called 'chotta dada' by his Bengal teammates, Tiwary made his ODI debut against Australia in 2008 but after a solitary failure in his debut, he had to wait over 3 years to play his next ODI, this time in the Caribbean. He played his last match for India in 2015 against Zimbabwe. Since then due to a tough competition in the middle order, he has got no chance for a comeback. (IE) 2) Yusuf Pathan: Yusuf Pathan made a name for himself as one of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in domestic and international cricket. Yusuf is a natural middle-order batsman who is capable of giving the innings a mighty push in the slog overs with a natural instinct to send the ball over the ropes. Older brother of Irfan Pathan, Yusuf came onto the international scene after Irfan. He was having the best time in his career when he made his debut for India in 2008. He played in the blue jersey till 2012 but due to his inconsistent performance, he was later dropped from the team. (IE) 3) Manpreet Gony: The speedster from Punjab, Manpreet Gony had was having the best time of his life when he made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings and also hi the first-class debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy back in 2007. His performance in CSK had impressed the Indian selectors and the very next year he was called up for the senior team. He made his debut for India in the Asia Cup against Hong Kong but played his last ODI against Bangladesh the very same year. Unfortunately, his second year in the IPL was not as impressive as first and he never play for India again. He still represents Punjab in first-class cricket and has taken 165 wickets for them over the years. (IE) 4) Pragyan Ojha: That Pragyan Ojha was prodigiously talented was never in doubt. It was only a matter of when and not if he would get to break into the national side. After a good campaign for the Deccan Chargers in IPL 2008, where he picked up 11 wickets from 13 games, Ojha was rewarded with a call-up to the national team, making his debut in the Asia Cup. Some good performances in that tournament ensured that he was included in the 16-man squad for the Sri Lanka series. The left arm orthodox bowler, he enjoyed most success as a bowler in Test cricket, where he took over 100 wickets in the period between 2010 to 2013. Still only 30 years old, it is very early to write off his chances of making a comeback to the Indian cricket team but it sure is tough as he has to compete with the likes of Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav amongst others. (IE) 5) Subramanium Badrinath: Have a chat with any South Indian cricket fan and they will talk about the plight of Subramanium Badrinath's career. An exceptionally talented cricketer, but he was just not at the right place at the right time. A technician with the bat, Badri possesses immense mental fortitude and has a cool head on his shoulders. He represented India in all three formats of the sport, but could not manage to make over 200 runs combined. His ODI debut came at the same time and in the same series as that of Virat Kohli. In his debut match, he scored 56 against an attack that had Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and was the only batsman apart from Virender Sehwag to get into double figures. Despite that, he was dropped from the following Test tour of Sri Lanka as the selectors picked Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina in his place. Despite the unfair dropping, Badrinath kept fighting in the domestic circuit and with consistent performances, forced his way into the squad for the 2011 tour of West Indies. But due to injuries, he has struggled for a comeback. (IE)
