International Yoga Day, shameless attempt by Modi govt to usurp yoga, says Congress

On the eve of International Yoga Day, Congress today accused the Narendra Modi government of making "brazen and shameless attempts at usurping" the ancient Indian heritage of yoga and turning it into a "propaganda and public relation exercise." The All India Congress Committee (AICC) also released a photograph of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru doing yoga, along with a picture and a maxim by Mahatma Gandhi, saying one should expect from others anything only after practising it oneself. The Modi dispensation is all geared up to mark the day tomorrow with a grand event on the capital's Rajpath, where thousands of health enthusiasts are expected to converge to perform yoga. The government has been promoting the June 21 event citing health benefits of yoga. Alleging "sheer hollowness" in the government's claim of propagating yoga for health benefits, Congress questioned the "cutting of the health budget by a whopping 17 per cent and reducing budgetary allocation of the yoga". He said that the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) has reduced the budget of yoga from Rs 1,069 crore in 2013-14 to a meagre Rs 318 crore this year. However, the city braced for more trouble as the met department has forecast heavy rains in the next 24 hours. All train services, suburban and long-distance, which were badly hit yesterday due to flooding of tracks, resumed to the great relief of the commuters in the country's financial capital. Ignoring drizzle, men and women streamed to suburban stations around the Metro to head for their offices and other places of work which had remained shut yesterday. "Water levels have receded. There is no water logging on railway tracks and suburban services are running normally," a Railway official said. Schools and colleges in the city and neighbouring Thane district remained closed today on direction from the state government. Heavy rains pummeled the sprawling city and suburbs during which two persons were electrocuted. Altogether 283 mm of rain, a quantum normally recorded in 10 days, was received in just 24 hours yesterday.(20/06/2015) (PTI)

BJP attacks AAP govt for 'spending crore' on advertisement

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi today came under attack from BJP for spending "crores of public money" in advertisements for political gains. "We have put a temporary stay on 'Bihar@2025' campaign till further orders from Central Election Commission," Bihar Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ajay V Naik said. BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi and Opposition leader Nand Kishore Yadav had on Thursday met Naik and submitted a memorandum alleging that the state government had violated the model code of conduct by launching 'Bihar@2025' campaign in the wake of Legislative Council polls on 24 seats on July 7. The campaign, being run by Bihar's Information and Public Relations Department, aims at reaching out to four crore people, engaging more than 10,000 government and civil society members for next 8 to 10 weeks. The stay has come as a jolt to Nitish Kumar government. (20/06/2015) (PTI)

AAP govt's amendments to Education Act no use, says BJP

Terming Delhi government's proposed amendments to the Education Act as a "mere eyewash", BJP today said steps being planned by the Arvind Kejriwal dispensation to curb exploitation of parents by schools charging hefty fees are of "no use". The party demanded that instead of introducing complaint redressal forum for parents through amendments to the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, a law should be brought in which will enable government to regulate fees ending woes of public. “They claim they are going to curb such fleecing. It (proposed amendments) is not going to stop fleecing," Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta told reporters. Gupta said setting up a complaint redressal forum will mean taking note of only those cases in which parents register grievances, while in the rest cases, even if there is exploitation taking places, schools will go scot-free, making the exercise futile.
