Complaint against Smriti Irani on educational qualifications:
In a complaint Ahmer Khan has filed a complaint in a Delhi court against Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly giving "false" information about her educational qualification in affidavits filed with the Election Commission. He alleged that Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani's affidavit for the April 2004 Lok Sabha elections stated she had completed her BA in 1996 from Delhi University (school of correspondence). Another affidavit of July 11, 2011 by Irani for contesting Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat said her highest educational qualification was B.Com part I from the School of Correspondence, DU. Yet another affidavit sworn by Irani on April 16, 2014 for contesting the Lok Sabha polls said she had completed Bachelor of Commerce Part-I from the School of Open Learning, DU. "It is evident from the contents of the affidavits filed by Smriti Z Irani that at best only one of the depositions by her on oath in respect of her educational qualifications is correct," the plea noted, alleging she had furnished "false information". It further said "the aforesaid affidavits of Smriti Z Irani, apart from the ostensibly false and discrepant statements in respect of her educational qualifications, also appear to contain false/discrepant statements in respect of immovable properties owned by her and other details set out by her." The magistrate fixed the matter for hearing on June 1. Court today slapped a cost of Rs 1,000 on petitioner. Khan's counsel H M Saraswat said they were awaiting the detailed order to find out the grounds on basis of which the court turned down the petition. He, however, said the option of moving the High Court is open. "But we will reach a final decision only after perusal of the order," Saraswat said. Sessions Judge Manoj Kumar Vyas had completed the hearing of the petition last week and had reserved the order for today. Earlier, the trial court had rejected the petition following which Saraswat had moved sessions court. The five witnesses mentioned in Khan's petition were prosecution witnesses and had already been examined. But after the trial court allowed the prosecution to summon four new witnesses in pursuance of the four undecided applications moved in 2006, the defence also made a plea to call these witnesses again. The case pertains to contravention of the Arms Act by using expired licence guns to allegedly poach black bucks in Jodhpur on October 1, 1998. The ads, in print and one on TV released yesterday, have Arvind Kejriwal in them asking people to fight against bribery and corruption. Supreme Court had yesterday barred publication of photos of leaders in government advertisements except those of the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India. Delhi government has put up several banner advertisements of the recently launched anti-corruption helpline – 1031 – across the city which also carries pictures of Arvind Kejriwal. On Wednesday, a 39-second long TV commercial had been released in which Kejriwal speaks about how his government was able to pay higher compensation to farmers hit by unseasonal rains, due to check in corruption. "This year unseasonal rain damaged crops of farmers and our government announced compensation of Rs 50,000 per hectare. How did we do it when other parties are saying that government does not have money? "This is result of decline in corruption in Delhi and the money we saved through it was used for paying compensation to farmers," Kejriwal said in the video. This too will not be aired. The SUV is owned by Hazare's Swami Vivekanand Krutudnata Nidhi, a trust formed to govern the funds received by Hazare by way of awards. "This vehicle took Anna from place to place when he launched the Jan Lokpal movement," the aide said. "It was this vehicle that witnessed Annaji's successful fight against the corrupt (Maharashtra) ministers in 2007 and 2009," he added. "I have decided to file SLP (Special Leave Petition) in SC after June 1st if K'taka govt does not file. So no need to go to KHC (Karnataka High Court)," he tweeted. The BJP leader's statement comes two days after he had indicated on micro blogging site 'Twitter' that he could file an appeal in the apex court against Jayalalithaa and "prove that the KHC judgment is a 'tragedy of arithmetic errors'", adding she would have to resign as Chief Minister if she had taken over by then. Swamy is the original complainant in the case. He had filed a case in 1996 against Jayalalithaa alleging that during her tenure as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996, she amassed properties disproportionate to her known sources of income. The DMK government subsequently filed cases, including the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case, against Jayalalithaa which led to her conviction in September last by a special court.
