Surgical strike by Indian Army: India has proved a big point. That it can enter territory controlled by Pakistan army easily and wreck the terror cells that it is promoting and sheltering in various places. This was done incisively with a decisive decision at the highest levels to launch a surgical strike in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and neutralise them. This task was carried out efficiently by the Indian Army without losing even one soldier! And our soldiers killed as many as 50 terrorists, yes that is the official figure revealed today, plus 9 Pakistan armymen. But where does this leave Pakistan. What next is going to happen? While India has said that it has ceased the operation yesterday itself and will not be launching any more in the near future, depending on the situation, and that means the Indian Army can preen at its success, but also remain vigilant for a Pakistani backlash, which can acquire any form and this can be carried out by many actors in the Pakistani establishment including army, its special forces, or even by its terrorists. While India may have rested its case after a triumphant operation, the onus of escalating the issue is now squarely on Pakistan. Will it choose to attack India in some form or the other? As far as can be gauged from the Pakistani official reaction, the answer, for the moment is negative. (Photo – Express Photo)

Pakistan PM and the other official reactions there have first of all denied that such a surgical strike ever happened! It could well have used the revenge word. It could have rattled its nukes and promised to take action in some other way. But none of that happened, because first they will have to admit that India came across the LoC and blodied the Pakistani nose and went back without any problem. But this would mean acknowledging the humiliation. Acknowledging that the attack happened. And that in turn would force them to talk of revenge. Else they would lose all authority to speak on behalf of the public. Better to deny the incident ever happened! No one is willing to do that there and therefore are choosing to call the Indian attack as a firing incident at the LoC. (Photo – PTI)

In short, at the moment, the next step for Pakistan is to adopt the principle of 'plausible deniability'. If no surgical strike happened, then where is the need to take retributive action? (Photo – Reuters)

Having said that, the Pakistan army will be looking to push its terrorists across the border. And this time, it is unclear whether they will also target civilians. In the last 2 strikes the terrorists had targetted Indian soldiers at Pathankot and Uri. Now that the gloves are off, it may open the terror front wider. So, India needs to be much, much more careful about its internal security. (Photo – PTI)

Pakistan has a number of sleeper cells in India consisting of terrorists. They will be looking to get them in action mode. For India, this is a time for being alert to nip such attacks in the bud (before they happen) and be ready to retaliate. Escalation? The Pakistani establishment is too used to the life of luxury to try and put it all at risk! (Photo – PTI)
