If you are wondering whether you can buy or sell shares today, the answer is no. The Indian stock markets, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) are closed today, April 10, on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti 2025.

There will be no trading activity in the equity, equity derivative, SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing), and currency derivative segments. This pause in trading comes after a highly volatile week marked by global concerns, including recession fears due to US tariffs and monetary policy announcements from the Reserve Bank of India.

Check the holiday list

As per the official list of stock market holidays for 2025, April will see three market holidays:

April 10 (Thursday) – Mahavir Jayanti

April 14 (Monday) – Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti

April 18 (Friday) – Good Friday

Furthermore, it is also interesting to note that the NSE will remain open for just 5 out of the next 12 days, with holidays falling on April 10, April 14 and April 18, along with regular weekend closures.

MCX morning break, evening trade on

While most trading segments are shut today, the Commodity Derivatives Segment on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) follows a split session.

The morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) is closed.

The evening session (5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM) will remain open for trade.

So, if you are into commodities trading, you can still access the markets later in the day.

Volatile week before the break

Before heading into the holiday, markets remained on edge. On April 9, both benchmark indices gave up earlier gains after a brief rally. The Sensex fell 379.93 points to settle at 73,847.15 and the Nifty 50 dropped 136.70 points, closing at 22,399.15.
