Every year on November 14, people all over the world come together for World Diabetes Day to spread the word about a health condition that affects millions. It’s a special day dedicated to raising awareness and supporting efforts to control and manage diabetes.

The day was set up by the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) back in 1991. It became a global event in 2006 when the United Nations gave it the official nod. November 14 is chosen because it’s the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, the guy who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1922 – a game-changer for people with diabetes.

To make sure as many people as possible know about this day, the UN introduced a blue circle logo in 2007. This circle is a worldwide symbol, shouting out to everyone that we need to understand and support the diabetes community.

World Diabetes Day 2023 Theme

This year’s theme for World Diabetes Day – it’s all about ‘Access to diabetes care.’ The focus is on making sure everyone, no matter who they are or where they live, can get the care and treatment they need for diabetes.

So, why is this day so important? Well, diabetes happens when the sugar level in your blood gets too high. It can affect people of all ages, and there are different types, like Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, Type 1 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. The good news is that many forms of diabetes can be managed with medicines and lifestyle changes.
