Maintaining a healthy heart during winter requires adopting habits that counteract the challenges posed by the cold weather. According to Dr. Anjan Siotia, Director of Cardiology, BM Birla Heart Hospital, regular exercise is essential but should be tailored to the season.

“Indoor activities like yoga, stretching, light aerobics, and resistance training are excellent options for staying active while avoiding exposure to extreme cold. It is crucial to include proper warm-up and cool-down routines to prevent strain on the cardiovascular system. Dietary habits also play a vital role in heart health during winter,” Dr. Siotia told Financial Express.com.

A diet rich in seasonal superfoods, such as leafy greens, root vegetables, citrus fruits, and omega-3-rich foods like nuts and seeds, can help combat inflammation and maintain optimal cholesterol levels.

It is equally important to reduce the intake of unhealthy foods like fried snacks, sugary beverages, and excessive alcohol, he revealed.

“Staying hydrated, even during cold months, supports blood flow and overall cardiovascular function. Additionally, dressing warmly and avoiding sudden exposure to extreme temperatures can minimize stress on the heart. Consistent sleep patterns and stress management are also key to reducing the risk of heart-related complications during winter,” he said.
