OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on Friday, August 22, 2025, announced that the artificial intelligence firm will open its first office in India later this year. In a post on X, Altman said he would personally visit India in September 2025 to meet stakeholders and assess the company’s expansion plans.
“We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I’m looking forward to visiting next month,” Altman wrote, underscoring the country’s growing importance to OpenAI.
Growth of ChatGPT in India
Altman highlighted that ChatGPT has seen exponential growth in the country, with its user base increasing fourfold in the past year. This surge in adoption, he said, was a major factor behind the decision to strengthen OpenAI’s presence in the Indian market.
“AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch ChatGPT users grew 4x in the past year and we are excited to invest much more in India!” Altman said.
According to company estimates, India is now the second-largest market for ChatGPT, reflecting both the scale of its digital ecosystem and the appetite for advanced AI tools.

‘Build AI for India, and with India’
Reports suggest that OpenAI’s Delhi office will serve as a hub to deepen engagement with a wide range of stakeholders. The team will work closely with governments, businesses, developers, academic institutions, and local partners to build a strong AI ecosystem tailored to India’s needs.
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” Altman said in an official statement
ChatGPT Go plan
The announcement follows the launch of an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan priced at ₹399. The plan is aimed at making AI more affordable for Indian users while providing higher usage limits. The move signals OpenAI’s intent to adapt its offerings for the local market as it scales its footprint.
Industry observers note that the Delhi office will allow OpenAI to better address the needs of its expanding user base in India and foster stronger collaboration with policymakers. The timing also aligns with the Indian government’s growing emphasis on AI adoption under the IndiaAI Mission, which aims to encourage research, innovation, and ethical deployment of AI technologies.
Altman’s forthcoming visit is expected to set the stage for deeper engagement between OpenAI and India’s technology ecosystem. With India emerging as both a vast consumer base and a hub of technical talent, the move is seen as a strategic step in cementing the country’s place in the global AI landscape.
As OpenAI prepares to open its Delhi office, the company has made clear that it views India not just as a market, but as a partner in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
