In a recent interview, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has issued a stark warning regarding the inevitable impact of artificial intelligence on the global labour market, cautioning that the AI technology will rapidly automate tasks and necessitate widespread adaptation in society.

Speaking on the accelerating pace of AI development in a BBC interview, Pichai highlighted that no sector is immune to the upcoming transformations. He specifically highlighted the effect on certain jobs, stating that the primary effect will be the “automation of routine tasks.”

“The nature of work will fundamentally change,” Pichai said, expressing concern about the speed at which this shift is occurring. He acknowledged that while AI will create new, highly skilled jobs, it will also displace many existing roles, especially those based on repetitive functions.

Sundar Pichai reveals how we can address this disruption

The Google CEO stressed that the world must move quickly to address this looming disruption by placing a major focus on education and retraining initiatives. He said that governments, educational institutions, and private companies have a shared responsibility to prepare the workforce for an AI-driven economy.

Pichai called for a proactive approach to prevent a gap between those who benefit from AI and those whose livelihoods are threatened by it. He concluded with a clear message, saying, “We need massive reskilling efforts to ensure that this technology benefits everyone, not just a few.”

Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu says we need a measured approach to AI adoption

On the other hand, Sridhar Vembu, the Chief Scientist and founder of Zoho Corporation, has presented a more measured philosophy toward integrating AI tools into the workplace, particularly for software development. While his team is “very bullish” on the use of AI for coding, Vembu has confirmed that the Indian SaaS giant does not “force feed or mandate AI” usage across its teams.

Instead, Zoho adopts an approach where the final responsibility of the end product rests with the human engineer. “We use AI coding tools across the company, with the caution to engineers that they have to review and approve all the code and take responsibility for it,” said Vembu. This strategy could mitigate technical debt and potential security vulnerabilities that can arise from unverified and automatically generated code.
