Android users have a new option now for digital assistants. ChatGPT has officially entered the race as a default assistant for Android devices, allowing you to switch from Google’s Gemini to ChatGPT. The latest beta version of the ChatGPT app (v1.2025.070) brings this new feature, enabling users to activate ChatGPT with the same gestures and buttons used for other assistants.

This new functionality is a game-changer for Android users who prefer ChatGPT’s capabilities or simply want more flexibility in their digital assistant options.

How to set ChatGPT as default assistant on Android

Getting ChatGPT set up as your default assistant is a straightforward process. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Download the latest beta version: The first step is ensuring you have the latest version of the ChatGPT app. You’ll need the beta version v1.2025.070, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or accessed by joining the beta program.
  1. Open Settings on your Android device: Navigate to the Settings app on your Android phone. Here, you can manage your apps and default services.
  1. Select default apps: Once you’re in the Settings, tap on Apps, then go to Default apps. This is where you can set which apps perform specific functions, including your digital assistant. In the Digital assistant app section, you’ll now see ChatGPT listed as one of the options. Select it, and ChatGPT will become your default assistant.

How to activate ChatGPT as your default Android assistant

After setting ChatGPT as your default assistant, you can easily launch it using these methods:

    • Long-Press the home button: If you’re using the traditional three-button navigation setup on your Android phone, long-press the home button to activate ChatGPT.
    • Swipe from the bottom corner: For users who prefer gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom corner of the screen to trigger ChatGPT.
    • Long-press the power button: If you have this setting enabled, you can also activate ChatGPT by holding down the power button.

These activation methods make it easy to access ChatGPT without needing to navigate through multiple screens or settings.

Limitations of ChatGPT as your default assistant

While the option to set ChatGPT as your default assistant is a fantastic addition, some limitations come with it:

    • No hotword activation: One of the key features that many digital assistant users enjoy is the ability to activate their assistant with a custom hotword, like “Hey Google” or “Hey Siri.” Unfortunately, with the current beta release, ChatGPT does not support hotword activation. You’ll need to use the available button presses or gestures to launch it.
    • Still in beta: This feature is part of a beta version, meaning it’s still in the testing phase. While it works well for many users, expect future updates to refine the functionality and introduce additional features.
