Elon Musk-owned X, the platform previously known as Twitter, wants to be the next LinkedIn. Or something close maybe. The microblogging website has started rolling out a new job search tool on the web for all users which is to say that it is completely free for use. The feature launched in beta in August, though it was only available for verified users or subscribers paying money to get their blue tick, at that time. In time, X plans to bring it to its Android and iPhone apps, too.
As expected, the tool is designed to find you your next job and also apply for it, much like what happens on similar professional websites including LinkedIn, the much popular job search platform owned by Microsoft. LinkedIn in fact would be X’s direct competitor, Elon Musk has already hinted. The tech mogul who’s gatekeeper for a bunch of other tech-focused companies including Tesla and SpaceX, and very recently, x.ai, has gone on record to claim X’s LinkedIn competitor would be “cool.” But the version we’re getting to see now is fairly basic.
Users can scurry through job listings and find descriptions for more context but the platform directs you to third-parties to apply and complete your application. At least at the time of writing. This is true even for jobs posted by X. Speaking of which, multiple openings are available across some of the top Musk-owned companies in case you’re on the look-out. X has been experimenting with “job cards” so individual listings could be more easily shareable in a future update and hopefully, we’ll see more of those coming if at all Musk is serious about taking on LinkedIn.
All this (and more) is part of Musk’s bigger ambitions to transform X into an “everything app”, a one-stop-shop for all your digital needs from social to payments and whatnot.
