TikTok reportedly plans to bring in a robust search results page by including generative AI. The feature appears to be a new highlight in TikTok and is called “search highlights.” The new AI feature allows you to get ChatGPT answers to your TikTok search questions.
A snippet of AI results appear at the top of some search results pages, and clicking into the section opens a new page with the full response. The Verge reported that in quick tests, users were able to find AI results for queries about recipes or topics like “best laptops 2024.”

The AI-generated content in TikTok’s new feature is produced using ChatGPT, as reported by an explanatory page on TikTok. The algorithm will display this content “when [it] finds them relevant to your search.” However, the feature seems to be limited currently, as not all queries yield AI answers.
From what it is understood, the AI smart search features cannot replace professional suggestions. This smart search might not be effective for legal, financial and insurance. “ We strongly recommend consulting experts in these fields for such queries,” TikTok explained.

It seems like TikTok, a video platform, has steadily added more features to its in-app search. Last fall, TikTok had started to test adding Google Search results to its in-app results page that could take users back to Google. TikTok is also expected to have experimented with adding links to Wikipedia, IMDb, and other websites directly in the app’s search results page.
It is believed that a similar feature named “search highlights” which are not labeled as AI-generated, will also be added in TikTok. It might show up at the top of search results. Critics argue that it’s not clear where this information is coming from, like whether it’s summarising videos or is being taken from someplace else. TikTok refused to respond immediately for comment about the features.
