Are you a tech enthusiast? Or planning to buy a phone in the new year? Or do you just want to stay up-to-date with whatever is happening in the world of smartphones? Either way, we got you covered! Here are the tech advancements in the smartphones space and the gadgets that you should look out for in 2025.
A recent Deloitte report published in November stated that in the coming months, “leading smartphones designers may see generative AI integration as a way to stoke demand for their premium models”.
The report added that in the past two years, the sales of smartphones have gone down, in part due to market saturation. It said, “It’s estimated that nearly five billion people now own smartphones — more than half of all humans. In 2025, smartphones are expected to put the utility of generative or gen AI to the test. The share of shipped gen AI-enabled smartphones could exceed 30% by the end of 2025.”
This, the report suggested, could help with a modest lift in the annual growth of global smartphone shipments from 5% in 2024 to 7% in 2025.
It’s not just gen AI though. Research studies also say that large language models (or LLM)-powered voice assistants will be the big addition this year in the smartphone space, adding to already existing tools like the availability of Apple Intelligence with Siri. AI in other forms is also being powered by smartphone manufacturers to help users increase the battery life or get better storage, among other things.
Apart from AI, smartphone manufacturers are also looking to rollout more multi-screen devices. In 2024, Huawei launched the world’s first tri-screen phone, the Huawei Mate XT with a HiSilicon Kirin 9010 SoC processor. What’s next is something we’ll have to wait a little to find out!
Another thing to look forward to in 2025 when it comes to the tech space is the launch of Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, which is expected to roll out soon in India.
When it comes to gadgets, there’s exciting updates and newer models that smartphone manufacturers are launching. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra series, which is expected to be available January 2025 onwards, with the price range starting from Rs 1,20,000.
The series, which is most likely to have the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, is expected to come with an improved battery life and display quality. It’s also expected to have a 50MP telephoto camera and 256GB of storage, apart from 16GB of RAM. The series is also expected to have an increased focus on AI processing capabilities.
Other than this, the iPhone SE 4, the launch of which is expected in March 2025, is going to be available at a lower cost, considering Apple standards, with the price range starting from Rs 50,000. The phone is expected to use an A18 Bionic chipset and a 48MP sensor, with again an improved battery life. When it comes to Apple, the iPhone 17 series is also something to look forward to, with its rollout expected in September. With iPhone 17, Apple might also be working more on intelligence, iOS19, and “privacy-preserving AI.”
In March is also expected Google Pixel 9a, with a price range starting from Rs 50,000. The phone is expected to have a Tensor G4 chip, but some analysts have been suggesting that it could have an Exynos 5300 modem as well. With a three-camera setup in all, the phone is expected to double down on its AI-powered capabilities with better and improved Google Assistant features too. The Google offering is also likely to have a standard 128GB storage setup, apart from 8GB of RAM.
