In what comes as a significant boost to India’s manufacturing hub, Samsung India has now started to manufacture its laptops locally. The South Korean giant has started assembly of its laptops at its Greater Noida facility, thus adding to the long list of locally manufactured products, which include its Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices.

The development, which was revealed by a PTI report, suggests that Samsung has locally started making the laptops, intensifying its “Make in India” initiative. Samsung has expanded its manufacturing portfolio. It has started manufacturing laptops in India at its Greater Noida factory. It has plans to start manufacturing more devices in the country,” a source told PTI. Samsung is yet to release an official statement.

Samsung laptops are now made in India

News about the local manufacturing came following a meeting between the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and senior Samsung executives, including Samsung Southwest Asia President and CEO JB Park. Vaishnaw commended Samsung’s efforts, stating, “Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation.”

Samsung’s journey in India began in 1996 and has been operating its second-largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in the world here, ranking as the second-largest exporter of handsets from the country. Decades later, rival Apple resorted to shifting its assembly line to India in a bid to make the iPhone’s production more cost-effective. While Apple continues to focus on localising iPhone production, Samsung is already taking the next step with its laptop manufacturing plans. What remains to be seen is whether the local manufacturing helps Samsung offer its premium laptops in India at more competitive prices.

That said, while Samsung holds a dominant position in the Indian smartphone market, its presence in the laptop segment has been relatively low. Samsung has not released a new Galaxy Book series laptop in recent months, thus giving a huge advantage to rival laptop manufacturers. In the coming weeks, however, things could change in the coming months as Samsung readies the Galaxy Book 5 series of AI PCs for India.

Samsung surpasses Apple in India’s premium segment

After launching the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 foldable phones, Samsung is poised to dominate the premium segment of smartphones in India. A recent report from market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) highlighted that Samsung surpassed Apple to claim the leadership position in India’s super-premium smartphone segment (priced at Rs 70,000 and above) during the first half of 2025. This was credited to the success of its flagship models and the introduction of AI-enabled features in its mid-range devices.
