Samsung has officially entered the race to build breakthrough artificial intelligence for smartphones. It is announcing the Galaxy AI mobile AI experience powered by its in-house Gauss language model today with plans to launch at least some of its new generative AI features for smartphones early next year, possibly beginning with the Galaxy S24 series.

In a press release sent out to the media, the South Korean tech giant says some of the best benefits of AI are yet to be fully realised in the mobile space and no other company can harness its potential like Samsung’s Galaxy devices. Galaxy AI will use self-developed on-device AI and collaborative cloud-based AI to “transform your everyday mobile experience with the peace of mind you count on from Galaxy security and privacy.”

Further building hype around the announcement, Samsung has teased what is presumably first of many AI features coming to Galaxy devices soon. It’s called AI Live Translate Call and as the name suggests, it will allow Galaxy users to get audio and text translations during phone calls in real time through Samsung’s native phone app.

“Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity and more for people around the world, but until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” Wonjoon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business said in a prepared statement, adding “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”

Samsung isn’t the first, and surely not the last company of its massive scale, to embrace generative AI even as OpenAI’s GPT-powered ChatGPT has caught the market by storm. Google’s new Pixel 8 series phones are relying heavily on artificial intelligence to make a selling. Apple, which has generally been cautious and tight-lipped about it, has also started to talk about investments it’s making in the field going so far as to call generative AI now fundamental to user experience.

The ChatGPT reference is ubiquitous to AI conversations today. Both the upsides and flip sides. Even at Samsung, employees were instructed not to use the AI chatbot for official work purposes following reports of sensitive data leak at the company. And so, it’s imperative that privacy is a big agenda to discuss and while it’s too early to say how things would pan out for Galaxy AI, a lot of these concerns should gradually be addressed as we fast approach the next Galaxy Unpacked which is set for an earlier than expected date, on January 17, according to reports.
