Gamers eyeing the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in India will now need to loosen their purse strings a bit more. Sony has officially increased the price of its disc-less console by a notable Rs 5,000, pushing its retail cost from Rs 44,990 to Rs 49,990. This price adjustment, observed on Sony’s official Shop at SC website, marks a significant shift in the console’s pricing strategy in the Indian market.

The price revision has specifically targeted the standalone PS5 Digital Edition. The other PlayStation 5 variants and accessories remain unaffected. The standard PS5 with a disc drive maintains its price of Rs 54,990, and the PS5 Digital Edition Fortnite bundle also holds steady at Rs 44,990.

Furthermore, essential accessories like the DualSense controllers and Pulse 3D wireless headsets have not seen any price changes. This selective increase suggests a targeted adjustment for the console’s entry-level model rather than a blanket price hike across the entire PlayStation ecosystem.

PS5 pricey not just in India

This move in India mirrors similar price adjustments Sony implemented in other global markets, including the UK and Europe. Back in April,  the company attributed those increases to a “challenging economic environment,” likely encompassing factors such as inflation, currency fluctuations, and rising production or logistics costs. While Sony hasn’t provided a specific statement for the Indian hike, it’s plausible that similar economic pressures are at play.

As of the current update, major third-party online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart have yet to reflect the new pricing for the PS5 Digital Edition. This might make it a great opportunity to pocket one of these gaming consoles until stocks last. The PS5 Digital Edition remains Sony’s most affordable gaming console in its present lineup.

On the other hand, Sony is yet to bring the PS5 Pro to the Indian shores. The enhanced console, which promises improved graphical performance and offers more storage, doesn’t sell in India owing to regulations.
