Perplexity, a company known for its AI-powered search engine, has announced it is developing its web browser called Comet – a move seen as a threat to several other leading AI names like ChatGPT, Bard, Grok and likewise more.
The announcement came via a post on the social media platform X, where Perplexity also invited people to sign up for waitlist. Right now, Comet is unavailable, and the company hasn’t said when it will be released or what it will include. But it has a name- Comet- with people being actively hired by the company to help build it.
The browser market is already packed with options. Big names like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge lead the way, while many smaller browsers also exist. With so much competition, Perplexity might be hoping its search engine fans- millions of people who use it every week- will give Comet a try and help it stand out.
The company in a separate post announced that it is actively hiring for roles to join them in building Comet. The current openings are for roles- technical data annotation analyst, machine learning engineer, senior search engineer, AI inference engineer, senior search engineer, data scientist and more.
Perplexity was founded in 2022 by a group of engineers. The startup gave birth to a free AI search engine that lets users type their query and it searches the internet to get a precise and well-researched answer.
Perplexity this month, launched a “deep research” tool to take on products from companies like OpenAI, Google, and xAI. Earlier this year, in January, they introduced an AI assistant for Android phones and a tool for developers called an API for AI search.
