OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, have announced their next AI model—GPT-4o—that builds on GPT-4 and takes things to the next level. The update was announced during OpenAI’s May 13 spring update event. Interestingly, the announcements come just a day before Google is set to officially announce its own AI updates and plans at Google I/O 2024 developer conference.
GPT-4o is both faster and more efficient than GPT-4, OpenAI claims, offering notable improvements across text, vision, and audio capabilities. The new AI model will be rolled out iteratively to all ChatGPT users for free with some of the text and image capabilities to be available immediately. OpenAI says because the new model is so efficient, it is able to bring to non-paying ChatGPT users as well. Paying customers will of course get some extra benefits including ramped up capacity.
Decoding ChatGPT 4.0
On Monday during the livestream, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said that “ The updated model is much faster and improves capabilities across text, vision, and audio.” Murati further added that “It’ll be free for all users, and paid users will continue to have up to five times the capacity limits of free users.”
The new GPT-4o is proud of its expanded language support. Now proficient in about 50 languages, ChatGPT 4.0 has gained the ability to analyse charts. Now ChatGPT can help to solve your long list of needs.
GPT 4o VS GPT 4: Which one is better?
Notably, OpenAI has prioritised performance optimisation, resulting in a twofold increase in speed and a significant reduction in deployment costs, making it 50% more economical for users.
With the introduction of a dedicated desktop application, you can now smoothly incorporate GPT-4o into your workflows. Now you can streamline tasks with document and screenshot uploads.
Moreover, the new AI’s memory functionality ensures continuity in conversations, while the ability to browse information directly improves interactions. GPT-4o will bring a faster version of human-to-machine interaction. A better and more natural way of interaction than early versions of ChatGPT.
The future of ChatGPT
At the OpenAI ChatGPT event, users were also introduced to the desktop version of ChatGPT, making it easier for users to seamlessly add ChatGPT in their workplace. Murati explains the new UI could make ChatGPT more interactive for the users. The latest GPT-4o will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks.
Critics argued that allowing ChatGPT with the feature to access and link to real-time, precise web information needs a logical progression. This might be a task that the current version of ChatGPT struggles with. Reportedly, OpenAI also confirmed that they have no plans to introduce a new search product that could rival Google’s offerings. Looking at the future it seems like OpenAI might come up with more developed versions of ChatGPT, maybe ChatGPT 5.
