OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R compared — what more do you get by paying Rs 25,000 extra?

The OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R may belong to the same OnePlus 12 series, but apart from sharing the look and design, the two are quite literally like chalk and cheese. They are poles apart and the price difference— ginormous. The OnePlus 12 starts at Rs 64,999. And the OnePlus 12R, at Rs 39,999. As we mentioned before, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R have mostly the same deign, though the colour choices are a bit different. That’s Flowy Emerald and Silky Black in case of the OnePlus 12 and Cool Blue or Iron Gray for the OnePlus 12R. There are some areas where the OnePlus 12R gets better, like say it has a slightly bigger battery, but then the OnePlus 12 gets you wireless charging perks. Both phones are launching with Android 14 with four years of software updates promised, and powerful Qualcomm chips for ample performance.

OnePlus 12 versus OnePlus 12R — every difference that you wanted to know:

1. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R design: The OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R have a glass and metal design. The 12, being a bigger phone, is a bit thicker (9.2mm versus 8.8mm) and heavier (220g versus 207g) in comparison. It is IP65 rated.
2. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R display: The OnePlus 12 has a 6.82-inch 2K or 1440p LTPO AMOLED display with up 120Hz refresh rate. The panel can peak 4,500 nits and has aqua touch, a feature that is billed to prevent ghost touches when the screen is wet. It has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Support for 2,160Hz PWM dimming is also available. The more affordable OnePlus 12R gets a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution and up to 120Hz refresh rate. Like the 12, it can top 4,500 nits, has aqua touch, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Both devices support Dolby Vision playback.
3. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R processor: The OnePlus 12 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 while the OnePlus 12R has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
4. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R RAM, Storage: The OnePlus 12 comes in a choice of 12GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB. RAM is of the LPDDR5x type, while storage is UFS4.0. The OnePlus 12R comes in 8GB/128GB and 16GB/256GB trims. The 128GB model uses slower UFS3.1 (the 256GB version is UFS4.0). RAM is of the LPDDR5x type in both.
5. OnePlus 12, OnePlus software, update support: Both phones run OxygenOS 14 based on Android 14 with up to four years of claimed updates from OnePlus.
6. OnePlus 12, OnePlus rear camera setup: The OnePlus 12 has a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel main Sony LYT-808 sensor, 48-megapixel Sony IMX581 sensor behind an ultrawide lens and another 64-megapixel OmniVision OV64B sensor behind a 3x periscope telephoto lens. The OnePlus 12R has a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 main sensor, paired to an 8-megapixel ultrawide and another 2-megapixel macro.
7. OnePlus 12, OnePlus front camera: The OnePlus 12 has a 32-megapixel front camera while the OnePlus 12R has a 16MP camera for selfies.
8. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R camera upgrade: OnePlus has brought 4K video recording to the front camera this year with the OnePlus 12. The OnePlus 12R front camera is limited to 1080p@30fps.
9. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R battery, charging: The OnePlus 12 has a 5,400mAh battery and supports 100W fast wired and 50W wireless charging. The USB Type-C port is version 3.2 gen 1. The OnePlus 12R is backed by a 5,500mAh battery and supports 100W fast wired charging ONLY. The USB Type-C port is version 2.0.
10. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R speakers, connectivity: Both phones hahve stereo speakers and no headphone jack. The OnePlus 12 supports Bluetooth 5.4 and eSIM connectivity. The OnePlus 12R has Bluetooth 5.3.
11. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R biometrics, alert slider: Both OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R have an in-screen fingerprint reader for biometric authentication and OnePlus’s signature alert slider mute switch on the left side of the frame.
12. OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R India prices: The OnePlus 12 comes in a choice of 12GB/256GB and 16GB/512GB for Rs 64,999 and Rs 69,999. The OnePlus 12R comes in 8GB/128GB and 16GB/256GB trims for Rs 39,999 and Rs 45,999.
