Amid swirling rumours that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) could carry a steep Rs 9,000 price tag in India—equivalent to a speculated $100 global launch price—a former Rockstar Games developer has poured cold water on those wild speculations. Obbe Vermeij, ex-technical director at Rockstar North, believes the highly anticipated AAA gaming title will stick to standard AAA pricing to maximise its player base, especially with an expected accompanying GTA Online component driving long-term revenue, just as the studio did with GTA 5.
The rumour of a $100 (approximately Rs 9,000) base price stemmed from industry trends where some next-gen titles have crept toward $80 or higher lately. This, combined with GTA 6‘s massive development costs, has led to speculations that Rockstar Games may put a premium on GTA 6’s price.
However, Vermeij argues that Rockstar’s proven business model—built on widespread adoption followed by ongoing monetisation—makes a premium upfront cost unlikely.
Why GTA 6 could be cheaper than rumoured
Vermeij explained in a recent interaction with GamesHub, stating, “I think that they probably won’t do that because although they haven’t said anything about it either, they will have a GTA 6 online component, and they’ll be thinking we want the biggest user base we possibly have. I think they’re just going to make it a regular-priced game and then make the money on the back-end in the years to come.”
This strategy mirrors the success of GTA V and its online mode, which launched over a decade ago and still boasts 18.3 million monthly active users as of August 2025. Continuous updates, microtransactions, and in-game purchases have generated billions in recurring revenue, reducing the need for a high initial price.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has echoed a value-focused approach, stating the company’s goal is “to deliver more value than what we charge.” While he has not ruled out variable pricing for special editions, official confirmation on the base price remains pending.
GTA 6 expected pricing and launch details
Analysts and leaks point to a more accessible standard edition:
- Global: Likely $70 (around Rs 6,000 in India with regional adjustments)
- India Standard Edition: Projected at Rs 5,999 – Rs 6,999
- Deluxe/Collector’s Editions: Up to Rs 10,000+ with bonuses
GTA 6’s console launch (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) was recently delayed to November 19, 2026, from an earlier May window, giving Rockstar additional polish time. A PC version is expected later, following the series’ traditional pattern. The game takes players back to Vice City, nestled among Leonida County (modelled after Florida), in the shoes of Jason and Lucia – a lovestruck couple who aim to make their way through life’s hurdles.
With hype at an all-time high, Rockstar appears poised to prioritise broad accessibility over a controversial price hike. Fans can expect official pricing details closer to pre-orders in 2026, ensuring the return to Vice City reaches the widest audience possible.
