Many of us have taken certain risks in life and then doubt ourselves later on. Sometimes  we have left our stable position in search of a new one. Dulski shared her experience of facing demotion as a new way to grow in her life. She says that these risks have helped her to shape her career.

Jennifer Dulski shares her experience

Jennifer Dulski says that most of her career choices were random and were not accepted on a positive note. In the year 1999, the founder and CEO of Rising Team and management lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business started her career with a marketing job at Yahoo. She says that many of her peers did not like her decisions. Dulski said that she first received criticism when she chose to work at Yahoo. She faced a second criticism when she decided to take a demotion and shift to a general management role.   “People looked at me and said, ‘what are you doing?” Dulski told Business Insider.  She explained that she took a demotion because she wanted to explore the field of technology. This act of hers was not understood by everyone.

Dulski further explained that she wanted to run a business and was always on the lookout for similar roles. The moment she got one, she had to risk her position. The marketing role she got, needed her to change her position to two levels below, as a junior. She compromised and opted for the one level below position.

After working for around 9 years at Yahoo, she left her role as a senior executive at Yahoo. She then joined Dealmap, which is a small startup. She faced many questions after taking this decision. Later on Dealmap got sold to Google, but she decided to stay. After that she left that Job to become the CEO and president of Change.org, a petition website,, which is a petition website.

Furthermore, she said that she has always taken what “I consider the unexpected or less obvious career option at many points along the road.”  In 2020 she started her own company, which she feels like the culmination of her career. Moreover, after 25 years of playing leadership roles in Facebook, Google and Yahoo, she finally started her company.  “Demotions helped me shape my career for the better,” Dulski concluded.
