Microsoft ensures Windows 11 compliance with the Digital Markets Act in the European Economic Area (EEA), offering users the flexibility to choose providers and uninstall most in-box apps. Notable changes include the option to uninstall Microsoft Edge and remove Bing Search from the Windows Search pane, expanding user control over pre-installed applications. The adjustments align with Microsoft’s efforts to adhere to regulatory standards and promote user choice within the operating system.

The DMA, which came into effect in March 2024, aims to promote fair competition in the digital market by preventing large tech companies from abusing their dominant positions. Microsoft’s decision to allow users to uninstall Edge, Bing, and ads is seen as a major concession to the DMA and a sign that the company is taking the act seriously.

In addition to allowing users to uninstall Edge, Bing, and ads, Microsoft is also making other changes to comply with the DMA. These changes include updates to Windows 11, specifically tailored for PCs in the European Economic Area (EEA).

Users in this region can now customise their experience by turning off the Microsoft News and ads feed on the Widgets Board. Additionally, the operating system now respects and remembers user-set defaults for web browsers and email clients. Windows 11 in the EEA will prompt users about syncing with a Microsoft account, providing more control over personalisation and privacy settings. It remains unclear if these functions will be available outside the EEA.

The upcoming updates for Windows 11 will first be available for testing in the Insider Beta Channel in the next few weeks. After that, they will be released to everyone early next year. Microsoft plans to make sure that Windows 11 follows the rules of the DMA (Designated Market Area) by March 6, 2024. Some of these updates will also be applied to Windows 10 around the same time.
