Meta reportedly plans to shut down ‘Workplace’, a version of Facebook that was built to enable communication among business teams and wider organisations.
TechCrunch reported that Meta will shut down Facebook-based alternatives to office communication platforms such as Slack and Microsoft Teams alternatives. Meta spokesperson Ashley Zandy told The Verge that it will be available to customers for use through August 31st, 2025.
What happened?
From what it is understood, formerly known as Facebook @ Work, was used internally for two years before its public launch in 2016. According to Zandy, there won’t be any changes in terms of its internal use.
“We are discontinuing Workplace from Meta so we can focus on building AI and metaverse technologies that we believe will fundamentally reshape the way we work,” a source later explained.
Furthermore, “Over the next two years, we will provide our Workplace customers the option to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo product, Meta’s only preferred migration partner,” Meta added.
What’s next?
Meta is expected to offer a 50 percent discount on the service starting in September. Experts suggest that Meta has been offered to work with customers on transitioning to the Zoom-owned Workvivo. After September 1st, 2025, Workplace is expected to become read- and export-only until June 1st, 2026, when access will end and the data will be deleted.
According to a memo to Workplace customers, Meta is recommending Zoom-owned Workvivo as a migration-ready alternative. Workvivo is a another enterpise communication platform that was acquired by Zoom in 2023.
