Meta has announced the introduction of AI-edited video ads on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. This feature allows advertisers to convert static images into dynamic videos, providing a fresh way to engage users as they scroll through their feeds.

Picture this: you’re scrolling through Instagram and stumble upon a vibrant ad for a local bakery. Instead of a static image of a delicious chocolate cake, you see the cake being sliced, with frosting swirling and sprinkles falling playfully. Thanks to Meta’s new AI animation tool, this once-static image is brought to life, captivating your attention and making the treat seem even more irresistible.

With the new powers from Meta, advertisers will now have the ability to upload a still image and utilise the AI tool to generate a video. For instance, a clothing brand can take a static picture of a model wearing their latest collection and transform it into a lively video showcasing different angles and movements, enhancing the appeal of the product. This capability taps into the growing trend of visual storytelling, making ads more relatable and engaging for consumers.

In addition to animating images, Meta’s tool can also expand the borders of existing videos. By generating “unseen pixels” within each frame, advertisers can effectively enlarge their video content without losing quality.

These features are part of a broader strategy by Meta to enhance its advertising offerings using AI. Already, the company provides tools for text and image generation, enabling advertisers to create customised campaigns. The rollout of these AI capabilities will also coincide with the introduction of a new full-screen video tab on Facebook, designed to further enhance user engagement.

Meta’s push into AI-driven advertising follows similar trends in the industry. Last month, Amazon unveiled an AI tool that creates video clips from product images, while TikTok has begun experimenting with AI-generated avatars for advertisements. A growing desire among brands to leverage AI  technology to create more immersive and impactful campaigns is being seen these days.
