CE Info Systems, the parent company of MapMyIndia, issued a legal notice to Ola Electric. According to a report by Forbes India, the company was alleged to have copied MapMyIndia’s data after Ola Electric introduced its own mapping service in India.
The notice accuses Ola Electric of violating their licensing agreement. Earlier in 2022, MapMyIndia was onboarded by Ola Electric to provide navigation services for its S1 Pro electric scooter. The legal notice points out that Ola’s activities breach the 2021 agreement’s terms. The term is expected to specifically forbid co-mingling and reverse engineering according to Intellectual Property regulations.
Ola Electric faces legal notice
According to sources the agreement does not allow Ola from combining the licenced product with any other competing product, engaging in reverse engineering, or attempting to extract or copy the source code from any API of the licenced product or related software. MapMyIndia claims that Ola Maps has copied its mapping data, which violates the licensing agreement signed in 2021.
According to Forbes India, the CE Info Systems said that “You have duplicated our client’s API (application programming interface) and SDKs (software development kits) from proprietary sources belonging to our client to build OLA Maps.” The company also mentioned that their client’s exclusive data has been copied/derived by Ola Maps to further their illegal motive and for your unjust commercial gains.
The company is believed to have further said that “Your assertion that you have developed API and map data/Ola Maps solely through open map is factually incorrect and not tenable.”
What’s next
After the mishap took place, Ola Electric said that the claims against the company are false. The company also added that the allegations are misleading and it will soon reply to the legal notice.
As reported by India Today, Ola spokesperson has shared a statement that read, “Ola Electric wishes to address the recent claims made by CE Info Systems Limited (“CE Info”) in relation to the alleged issues with Ola Maps vis- -vis MapMyIndia and reported in news media.”
He further added that the company would like to state unequivocally that these allegations are false, malicious and misleading. He also said that Ola Electric aims to stand by the integrity of its business practices. Furthermore, the company will suitably respond to the notice shortly.
Earlier this month, Bengaluru-based Ola had introduced Ola Maps as a substitute for Google Maps. Additionally, the company also transitioned its operations to its own mapping service, moving away from Google Maps.
