Aiming to disrupt the Smart TV industry, Reliance Jio has launched JioTele OS, a homegrown Smart TV operating system designed to compete with Google TV and similar other global platforms. With its AI-powered recommendations, seamless content integration, and an optimised viewing experience, JioTele OS aims to offer a faster, more personalised, and more affordable alternative to leaders in this space.

With an estimated 35 million connected TV households in India and rising, the Smart TV market is expanding rapidly. However, many consumers face issues such as slow performance, lack of regional content, and limited customisation options. The company says that JioTele OS seeks to bridge these gaps by offering an India-centric, AI-driven experience that prioritises speed, accessibility, and content diversity.

JioTele OS vs Google TV: The difference

Being a homegrown brand, the JioTele OS is designed with solutions for India-focused challenges. While Google TV offers an international content-focused ecosystem, JioTele OS deeply integrates with India’s entertainment scenario.

AI-powered personalisation

JioTele OS utilises advanced AI-driven content recommendations fetching AI tailored recommendations. The OS learns from user behaviour to suggest movies, TV shows, and live channels based on personal preferences. Unlike Google TV’s algorithm, which works on global trends, JioTele OS prioritises Indian content, including regional cinema and local OTT platforms.

Optimised for 4K, lag-free viewing

JioTele OS is designed for smooth, lag-free 4K streaming, ensuring a seamless experience even on budget-friendly Smart TVs. On the other hand Google TV’s performance can vary depending on the manufacturer.

Integrated Indian entertainment hub

With JioTele OS, a single remote control allows users to switch between different content sources, reducing the complexity of navigating multiple apps.

Jio promises frequent updates to the OS ensuring its compatibility with new apps, security protocols, and evolving entertainment technologies.

Launch and brand partnerships

Televisions powered by JioTele OS will be available in India starting February 21, 2025, debuting with popular brands such as Thomson, Kodak, BPL, and JVC. More brands are expected to come on board in the coming months, says the company. The move will help JioTele OS reach a wide audience, from budget-conscious buyers to premium Smart TV users. With increasing demand for affordable yet high-performance Smart TVs, JioTele OS could have a significant impact on India’s connected TV landscape. Jio, which has already changed mobile connectivity and fiber broadband with Jio 4G and JioFiber, is now expanding its reach into Smart TVs.
