Reliance Jio is set to bring its satellite internet service in India. According to recent reports, Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has been given the green light by Indian regulatory authorities to launch a satellite internet service similar to Starlink.
According to a Reuters report, Jio Platforms in collaboration with Luxembourg’s SES has secured regulatory clearance from India’s space authority to operate satellites within the country.
Orbit Connect India which is a joint venture between Jio and SES focuses on delivering gigabit fiber internet via satellite technology. It aims to deliver high-speed internet access across the country.
This development unfolds amidst intensified competition, with global giants like Amazon.com and Elon Musk’s Starlink actively seeking approval to introduce satellite communication services in India, home to the world’s largest population.
The authorisations granted to Orbit Connect India by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in April and June, which have not been publicly disclosed, enable the company to operate satellites over Indian territory. However, before commencing operations, additional approvals from the country’s Department of Telecommunications are required.
In essence, while Orbit Connect India has received permission to deploy satellites in Indian airspace, it still needs further clearance from the telecom department to officially start its services.
