In response to the devastating landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have taken significant steps to aid the affected communities and support rescue and relief operations. Their efforts are providing much-needed connectivity and resources during this critical time.

Reliance Jio has promptly installed a second dedicated tower in the landslide-affected area following a request from the State Disaster Management Authority. This strategic move is aimed at expanding network capacity and coverage, thereby ensuring reliable communication for distressed residents, rescue workers, and disaster management teams.

Enhanced connectivity is crucial in coordinating rescue efforts and ensuring timely assistance. Jio’s extension of network coverage to include control rooms and various relief camps is facilitating better coordination in rescue and relief operations, underscoring the importance of robust communication infrastructure in disaster scenarios.

Airtel has announced a series of relief measures specifically tailored to support its users in Wayanad. Recognising the immediate communication challenges faced by its customers, Airtel is offering special benefits to prepaid users whose account validity has expired. These customers will receive 1 GB of free mobile data per day, unlimited calling, and 100 SMS per day for three days. This initiative ensures that affected individuals can stay connected with loved ones and access vital information during the crisis.

For postpaid customers, Airtel is extending bill payment deadlines by 30 days, providing uninterrupted mobile service without the immediate pressure of bill payments. This measure ensures that customers remain connected during the emergency, enabling them to communicate and coordinate effectively.

Beyond customer-focused initiatives, Airtel is actively supporting local relief efforts. The company has transformed all 52 of its retail stores in Kerala into relief collection points, where people can drop off essential supplies. These materials will then be handed over to the local administration for distribution to the communities most affected by the landslide. This initiative streamlines the collection and distribution process, ensuring that aid reaches those in need swiftly and efficiently.

The combined efforts of Reliance Jio and Airtel highlight the critical role of telecommunications companies in disaster response. By enhancing connectivity and providing direct support to affected individuals and communities, these companies are making a substantial difference in the ongoing relief efforts in Wayanad.
