The iPhone 17 series is here, and other than upgrades across the entire range, Apple has also hiked the price. The recent introduction of the trade tariffs by the US administration, along with the hike in prices in Apple’s supply chain, has led to inflated price tags for the iPhone 17 series, and India, as usual, is on the receiving end. While the price hike is relatively minimal for the base iPhone 17, the same can’t be said for the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.

Considering how attractive the Pro variant has always been to the masses, the iPhone 17 Pro’s price has created a lot of chatter across social media. Apple, despite having a localised assembly line in India, continues to sell the iPhone 17 Pro at an inflated price, thus retaining it as one of the most expensive conventional smartphones you can buy today. The new iPhone Air is also expected to garner a bigger fanbase.

iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max not cheaper in India this year

Despite the exorbitant price tags for the Pro variants every year, industry analysts expected Apple to reduce the price of the Pro variants in India owing to local assembly lines. Unlike previous years, Apple has now started to assemble the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max in India, earmarking them for exports to the US market. This led many to speculate that the local production could lead to Apple drastically reducing the price for Indian buyers.

Experts attribute the price disparity of the iPhone 17 Pro to taxation structures. Luxury goods like high-end smartphones are often taxed heavily in emerging markets to generate revenue for social programs. Additionally, companies often tend to have huge profit margins for luxury goods, all in a bid to retain the aspirational status.
