Google has released a new software update for its Pixel Buds Pro earbuds that adds a new feature called Conversation Detection. This feature is similar to Apple’s Conversation Awareness mode on the AirPods Pro 2, and it uses AI to detect when you start speaking and automatically switches the earbuds to Transparency mode. This allows you to hear your surroundings and have conversations without having to remove the earbuds. This feature comes with the Pixel Buds Pro 5.9 update.

Conversation Detection is an optional feature, and it can be enabled or disabled from the Sound settings page. Once enabled, it will work automatically whenever you have the earbuds in your ears and are listening to audio. When you start speaking, the music will pause and the earbuds will switch to Transparency mode. Once you finish speaking, the music will resume and the earbuds will switch back to Active Noise Cancellation mode.

In addition to Conversation Detection, the new Pixel Buds Pro software update also includes a number of other improvements, such as support for Bluetooth Super Wideband for better call quality. It also adds a Hearing wellness monitor to the main menu that tracks your sound exposure levels over time. It basically protects your ear health by helping understand and improve your listening habits. These features are exclusive to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.

“With the help of AI, you no longer need to take out your earbuds for conversations. When you enable Conversation Detection, AI detects when you start speaking and responds by pausing your music and switching to Transparency Mode, allowing you to hear all that is being said. When you stop speaking, the feature automatically resumes your music and turns on Active Noise Cancellation,” says Google while announcing the update.
