Google has updated Gemini, its AI-based digital assistant which will navigate maps automatically when asked for Google Maps navigation “when you ask for directions.” Reportedly, the upgrade will “navigate to [place]” or “take me to [x]” commands first show a brief summary with the route, how long it will take, and how many miles, as well as a map and link to “directions.” This is one capability that Gemini can handle natively with the Google Maps extension instead of having to punt to the legacy assistant.

Once the users commands Gemini to go to a particular place, it will show a summary of the route, the distance to the destination, and the time taken to reach the location using the Google Maps integration. The Gemini app on Android phones can automatically start navigation to wherever the users want to go, as per insights from the official website.

According to the Gemini app’s changelog on the Google Play Store, when using the application, users don’t need to tap on the send button anymore. It is believed that the voice commands will be automatically sent. Experts believe that this will not only help to ease navigation, but can also help save time, as it will give an idea of the best route to choose and avoid traffic. It is believed this can also avoid road accidents, taking place during rush hours.

In addition to the existing upgrade “ Users can now use their voice to set reminders and calendar entries with the Gemini app if your Workspace extension is turned on in your Gemini app settings. Workspace extension availability varies by country”, Google concluded.
