After facing privacy issues for Google cloud, Google Maps seem to be upgrading its privacy strategies.  Google Maps will store your data on local devices and not on the clouds!

News comes in that Google revealed that all the location history will be saved on users’ devices. Google seems to have renamed the location history feature to ‘Timeline.’

Google Maps Updated!

Reportedly, Google sent an email to its users which says “you have until December 1st to save all your travels to your mobile device before it starts deleting your old data.”

It looks like tha the web version of your Timeline (location history tracker)  will not be available on the web. Initially you could access your location history through the web interface, but the new upgrade will no longer be available on Maps for desktops. However, the feature will continue to work on Google Maps for Android and iOS.

“If you don’t update your settings by the deadline in the emails and notifications you receive, you may lose some or all of your Timeline data, like your visits and routes,” Google warned users in the emails. So, it would be better to update your settings promptly rather than losing any Timeline data.

Google Maps updates: How can you save your data?

To further protect your data, Google is expected to offer end-to-end encrypted cloud backups for your Timeline in Maps. This will eventually help you to access this backup, adding an ‘extra layer of security.’

During the entire upgrade, in case you want to keep using Timeline, you have to just follow these steps:

  • Open Google Maps on your mobile device.
  • Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen, and choose Your Timeline.
  • Next select whether to keep your location data until you want to manually delete it or have Google auto-delete it after three, 18, or 36 months. Google will store the information you want to keep on your device.

Furthermore, the company will send out emails to users once the feature is available for them, as reported by by 9to5Google.
