While Google still doesn’t have a significant global hour, it is peaking with numbers every day. The recent Pixel 8 launch has played a significant role in adjusting this figure, adding to a report claiming that Google has shipped about 40 million Pixel phones thus far.

Global market intelligence firm IDC’s Vice President Franciso Jeronimo confirmed via a post on X, formerly Twitter, that the total sales have been nearing 40 million units since its inception in 2016. Jeronimo also adds that the sales have grown “double-digit” in recent years.

Is 40 million a really “giant” figure in the smartphone market?

It isn’t, but in the case of Google it’s not majorly a hardware company— this figure may be a lot. For instance, Apple has performed exceptionally well in terms of shipments, per Counterpoint research. As of 2022, it boasts an 18 per cent market share, and in Q2 2023 alone—Cupertino’s tech firm shipped over 45.3 million iPhones.

The Q4 2023 is expected to be even better than its previous sales report—it shipped about 81.5 million units in Q4 2021, and about 70 million units in Q4 2022. Safe to say, Apple peaks shipments during Q4 2022. It also corresponds to the time when Apple iPhones are fresh and new—and look appealing to consumers.

Google is moving up steadily, however, with unprecedented growth

Pixel’s biggest market is its homeland—the USA. However, even in the states, the California-based tech firm’s smartphone brand struggles to make a significant presence. Its market share from Q1 2022 to Q2 2023 has been on an average of 2.8 per cent, per Counterpoint research. However, the happy part is that Pixel phones are above Xiaomi phones in the Japanese market, per Statcounter’s report.
