What if you get ads in ChatGPT? Yes this might be a plan that OpenAI is reportedly working on. In an interview with the Financial Times, Sarah Friar. OpenAI’s chief financial officer (CFO),  said that the artificial intelligence (AI) platform aims to bring advertisement.  Here’s a detailed look at how your ChatGPT experience is gonna change.

The AI company is making plans to introduce an advertisement model. Friar further highlighted that the company plans to be “thoughtful about when and where” the ads are implemented. The decision comes after it faced a significant cash burn of around $5 billion this year. Most of this was driven by high operational costs. This  includes employee salaries and  server infrastructure.

Advertising has become an important part of companies in improving its revenue strategies. Other social media platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook have been implementing ads. This has helped them create a steady income stream by leveraging their huge user bases.

Looking at the current situation, OpenAI usually generates revenue through its ChatGPT Plus subscription service. In addition to this the platform also makes money from its ChatGPT APIs. This basically allows developers to create applications using the company’s AI technologies. Despite projections of $3.7 billion in revenue for 2024, the company still seems to lack in its revenue strategies. So, in order to cope up with its competitors the new strategy might come into action.

The future roadmap

However she passed another statement where her previous statement seemed contradictory. She also said that while OpenAI is open to exploring other revenue streams in the future, they have no active plans to pursue advertising.

Some analysts suggested that she made this statement in fear of facing backlashes. Well, ChatgGPT is one of the most used AI tools among others. It could be not a good experience for users to see ads in between using the tool. No, one likes advertisements in between anything. It’s like an unwanted break between a workflow. As of now no official confirmation is not made, so all we can do is wait for any breakthrough.
