Sam Altman’s OpenAI has launched the highly anticipated next version of its flagship ChatGPT, highlighting major leaps in AI performance amid an intensifying global competition in the field. During a press briefing, the company announced that ChatGPT-5 is being made available at no cost to all users, with the tool now serving nearly 700 million people every week.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, described the new model as a “major leap” toward reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a concept the company defines as a self-directed system capable of surpassing human performance in the majority of economically important tasks, essentially matching or exceeding human job capabilities.
OpenAI’s GPT-5 variants and fee:
OpenAI has introduced two additional GPT-5 variants: the streamlined GPT-5-mini and the ultra-fast, cost-efficient GPT-5-nano, the latter being exclusive to API users. As per the company, users on the free plan will have access to GPT-5 and GPT-5-mini, while those subscribed to the Plus tier will enjoy the same models but with “substantially higher” usage limits.
For $200 per month, the Pro plan unlocks unlimited access to GPT-5, along with two exclusive models: GPT-5-pro, a more advanced version of the core model, and GPT-5-thinking, which is capable of extended processing for more complex queries. Pro subscribers will also retain the ability to access and switch between older model versions.
How to Use GPT-5?
No setup is required—simply sign in and open ChatGPT, and you’ll automatically be using GPT-5. It will replace previous models like GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, OpenAI o4-Mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5. Just enter your prompt, and GPT-5 will handle the rest.
GPT-5 availability:
Beginning next week, Pro users will have the option to link their Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar to ChatGPT, while availability for other user tiers will be introduced later, though no exact timeline has been announced.
