Apple has reportedly considered Meta as a potential AI partner, opening gates to bringing Llama-powered Meta AI services to iPhone and other devices in the future. Apple has already partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its devices, but it has made it abundantly clear that it is open to collaborating with more companies including Google’s DeepMind and Anthropic to widen the options for its vast user base.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Cupertino-based tech giant has discussed with Facebook parent Meta Platforms about adding the social media giant’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) model into its products.
Apple meets Meta?
It seems like after OpenAI and ChatGPT, Apple is looking for other AI partners. Apple is also in talks with Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic and Perplexity, which are AI startups. Earlier this month, during the announcement of Apple Intelligence, Apple said it would be partnering with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT into its upgraded version of Siri.
The Wall Street Journal didn’t reveal the size of the potential financial terms of these deals, but the talks may involve AI companies selling premium subscriptions of their services through Apple Intelligence. Through this proposed partnership Meta can get access to Apple’s vast distribution network.
The plan ahead
It looks like in spite of being rivals Apple and Meta might partner for the development of Apple’s AI models.
Early reports suggested that Apple’s privacy changes in 2021 had cost Meta $10 billion in 2022. Furthermore, Meta seems to have been providing workarounds to avoid Apple’s 30 per cent service charge on certain advertisements.
Despite the past conflicts, it is believed that Apple wants to partner with Meta for adding more complex AI systems in its devices. When asked about the tentative date for the execution of the proposed collaboration Meta declined to comment and Apple did not immediately respond, WSJ explained.
