At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple unveiled a significant update to Xcode, its primary tool for building apps. The latest enhancement integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Xcode, thus providing developers with AI-powered assistance to streamline coding and improve efficiency.
The integration of ChatGPT into Xcode allows developers to generate code, fix errors, and create documentation effortlessly, without requiring an OpenAI account. By offering real-time AI support, Apple aims to make coding faster and reduce the workload for developers, helping them focus on creativity rather than solving technical issues.
In addition to ChatGPT, Apple announced the Foundation Models framework, which enables developers to incorporate AI models from various providers using API keys. This framework supports on-device AI processing, enhancing speed, security, and reducing dependency on cloud-based solutions. With this approach, Apple is giving developers more flexibility in choosing AI-powered tools that best suit their needs.
Apple’s AI strategy
This latest update underscores Apple’s growing commitment to AI in the app development environment. It also shows Apple’s preference for sticking with OpenAI’s generative AI offerings rather than Google’s Gemini.
For example, the Image Playground app is now integrated with ChatGPT to offer new art styles like oil painting or vector art. The app sends the description or photo to ChatGPT and generates a new image.
ChatGPT has also been integrated into Visual Intelligence, wherein users can ask the OpenAI chatbot about information of whatever is being displayed on the screen. Access to ChatGPT is also integrated in Writing Tools and Siri, thus giving users the option to tap into ChatGPT’s image and document-understanding capabilities without needing to jump between tools.
