Amazon has introduced a Rs 49 processing fee for customers availing Instant Bank Discounts (IBD) of Rs 500 or more, effectively reducing the net savings from these offers. The fee, implemented on Friday, applies to all users, including Prime members, and remains non-refundable even if an order is canceled or returned.
This move aligns Amazon with Flipkart, which already imposes a similar charge. Amazon states that the fee is meant to cover expenses related to the “aggregation, management, and processing” of bank discount offers on its platform.
Customers must now factor in this additional cost when calculating their savings. For example, a Rs 5,000 purchase with a Rs 500 bank discount will now amount to Rs 4,549 instead of Rs 4,500.
Who needs to pay this fee?
- Any customer using a bank discount of Rs 500 or more
- Prime members are not exempt; the fee applies to all users
- Discounts below Rs 500 are not subject to this charge
What happens if you cancel or return the order?
The Rs 49 processing fee remains non-refundable even if the order is canceled or returned. Once applied, the charge is final.
Why is Amazon imposing this fee?
Amazon explains that the fee helps cover costs related to managing and processing bank discount offers. Essentially, it acts as a service charge for facilitating these discounts.
This policy shift may impact consumer behavior, especially for those whose discounts are slightly above Rs 500, potentially leading them to adjust cart values or rethink their payment methods for better savings.
