How many variants of the iPhone exist today? For the iPhone 16 generation, it’s five (remember the iPhone 16e?). Based on existing rumours, Apple will release five new models under the iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max in 2025, followed by an iPhone 17e in 2026. However, from late 2026 and beyond, the iPhone launch timeline is going to change dramatically.
Based on new rumours, Apple has plans to bring six new variants of the iPhone 18. The major ‘iPhone launch event’ in September 2026 is expected to bring an interesting choice of new iPhone models:

– iPhone 18 Pro Max
– iPhone 18 Air
– iPhone Fold (the foldable iPhone)
What happens to the ‘standard’ iPhone 18?
Apple’s new launch policy will now release the iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e in early 2027. Cupertino will split the iPhone launch timeline into two phases, with the September event now reserved for the more premium variants. The March event will take care of the more affordable models such as the regular iPhone 18 and the more accessible ‘iPhone SE-replacing’ iPhone 18e.
The tip comes from Instant Digital, a fairly reliable source when it comes to all iPhone leaks. However, you should take all this with a grain of salt as Apple is yet to make any official announcement.
What will the iPhone lineup look like in 2027?
Since Apple plans to keep some of the older models in sale too, consumers will have a wider range of models to choose from across various price points.
On one hand, consumers can choose from the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air models as previous-gen offerings at much lower prices. The iPhone 17e will take care of those seeking an entry-level iPhone without missing out on other premium features.
On the higher-end side, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will continue to offer all the bells and whistles in a conventional slab form factor. The iPhone Fold will offer a new variety of the iPhone experience with a larger foldable display, similar to the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The iPhone 18 Air could try pitching to those seeking a regular non-Pro iPhone, urging users to pay extra for upgrading to a slim and trim experience. The regular iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will join the lineup in 2028, replacing the older-gen iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e.
