Rajinikanth is a name that needs no introduction. For decades, the ‘Thalaiva’ has had a huge fan following, broken many box office records, and has a strong screen presence. While many of his films became iconic, he also turned down several big projects. Some of these films later became major hits and helped other actors become stars. So, which films did Rajinikanth reject that changed Indian cinema?

Tiranga

Rajinikanth was offered the role of Inspector Wagle in the 1993 patriotic action film Tiranga. The film starred Raj Kumar in the lead role. Rajinikanth reportedly declined the offer as the part was not the main lead. The role eventually went to Nana Patekar, whose performance earned widespread praise. Tiranga went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year and played a major role in making Nana Patekar a leading star.

Mudhalvan

Director Shankar initially developed Mudhalvan with Rajinikanth in mind. However, the actor chose not to take up the project. The political thriller was later headlined by Arjun Sarja. His intense performance as a television reporter who becomes a chief minister struck a chord with audiences. The film became a massive success and remains one of Tamil cinema’s most popular political dramas.

Indian

Another Shankar directorial, Indian, was also first offered to Rajinikanth. After he declined the role, Kamal Haasan stepped in and delivered one of the most memorable performances of his career. The film turned into a cult classic and is still widely discussed years later. Its sequel was released in 2024, and reports suggest that a third part is currently in the works.

Dhruva Natchathiram

Rajinikanth was also approached for Dhruva Natchathiram but did not take up the project. The role eventually went to Vikram, known for choosing intense and challenging characters. Despite production delays, the film generated strong interest and added another notable project to Vikram’s career.

Papanasam

The Tamil remake of Drishyam, titled Papanasam, was initially offered to Rajinikanth. He reportedly declined the film due to creative differences over certain scenes. Kamal Haasan was later cast in the lead role and received praise for his subtle performance. The film performed well at the box office and was appreciated by critics and audiences alike.

Rajinikanth’s film choices have always drawn attention, whether he accepted or rejected a role. While these films became turning points for other actors it shows that even the roles he turned down went on to leave a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
