In order to combat urban air pollution and climate change, leading FMCG conglomerate Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group), along with climate-tech startup Liquid Trees unveiled India’s first outdoor Liquid Tree. Installed at the DS Group’s Noida headquarters, this innovative urban photo-bioreactor combines nature, technology and art to promote sustainability.

What is a Liquid Tree?

The Liquid Tree, housed in a cubical structure containing 1,600 liters of microalgae solution, matches the carbon-capturing capacity of six mature trees. These microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that rapidly remove particulate matter, sequester carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, offering a practical solution for pollution-stricken cities. Unlike traditional trees that take years to mature, microalgae can be deployed within weeks, making them a dynamic alternative for urban landscapes.

The installation not only serves an ecological function but also supports a circular economy. Harvested microalgae can be repurposed as nutrient-rich feed for local flora, adding further value to this green innovation. Beyond its utility, the Liquid Tree stands as a visual reminder of the need for collective action against environmental challenges.

Vice Chairman of DS Group Rajiv Kumar emphasized the significance of this initiative and said, “The Liquid Tree symbolizes our commitment to environmental sustainability. As we face critical issues like climate change and declining air quality, embracing innovative solutions like this is essential. This project underscores our dedication to fostering a healthier Bharat for present and future generations.”
