Cyclone Nisarga Updates, Heavy Rain Alert, Mumbai Weather HIGHLIGHTS: IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra informed that Cyclone Nisarga has weakened into a ‘cyclonic storm’ in the evening. It hit the Maharashtra coast with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph today afternoon. The process of landfall, which began at 12.30 PM at Alibaug, had completed by 2.30 PM, IMD DG said while speaking to PTI. By 4 PM, the cyclone had started weakening with wind speeds of 90-100 kilometres per hour.
Mumbai, which is already grappling with coronavirus pandemic reporting over 40,000 cases, was pounded by heavy rains and powerful winds in the afternoon. The Navy and NDRF had deployed several teams to tackle the situation. NDRF deployed as many as 43 teams along the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat that fall in the Cyclone Nisarga’s path. Over 40,000 people hd been evacuated to safer locations in Maharashtra.
Cyclone Nisarga is the second severe cyclonic storm to hit the Indian coastline is less than a month after Cyclone Amphan ravaged West Bengal and Odisha. The cyclone, considered to be one of the most devastating to have originated from the Bay of Bengal in last few years, killed at least 100 people apart from destroying crops and damaging property across the two states.


Cyclone Nisarga: IMD predicts extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik districts and heavy to very heavy rainfall in Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara districts in Maharashtra during the next two and half hours.
Cyclone Nisarga: Maharashtra government informs that restoration of power supply has been started in Ratnagiri and Shrivardhan. Power supply in Murud, Mandgaon, Goregaon, Alibag, Mhasala, Guhagar, Dapoli taluquas where power supply was switched off from EHV stations will be restored as soon as wind and rain slow down, it says.

Cyclone Nisarga: A 58-year-old man was killed after a power transformer collapsed on him due to the heavy winds in Raigad district as cyclone Nisarga lashed coastal Maharashtra. The incident took place at Umate village near Revadanda. Dashrath Babu Waghmare, the deceased, was rushing home as heavy rain and winds pounded the area. An electrical transformer toppled over and fell on him and he died before doctors could attend to him. (PTI)
Cyclone Nisarga update: Fire brigade department in Pune Municipal Corporation says that it has responded to 60 calls related to tree uprooting and 9 calls related to waterlogging till evening today. Earlier, Cyclone Nisarga made landfall in Raigad district, south of Mumbai, with wind speeds of up to 120 kmph. The flight operations at the Mumbai airport, which were earlier suspended till 7 pm, will now resume from 6 pm. The MIAL, the private airport operator, had earlier announced that all operations at the CSMIA will remain suspended till 7 pm as a precautionary measure in view of the cyclone Nisarga. However, now it has announced that operations will start from 6 pm. 'The landing and take-off is permitted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be permitted from 6 pm,' the spokesperson said. (PTI)

Vehicular movement on iconic Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai was suspended on Wednesday in light of cyclone 'Nisarga' which began landfall near Alibaug, about 95 km from Mumbai, police said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has shifted zoo animals in Mumbai to safer locations in view of the impending threat from Cyclone Nisarga. "In the wake of Cyclone Nisarga, we have shifted Veer Mata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo animals, including tiger, leopard, hyena and others, into their holding areas at the zoo which are safer to avoid any damage from tree fall," the BMC said in a statement.
Nearly 50,000 people living in coastal areas of South Gujarat and some 4,000 residents of the neighbouring Union Territory of Daman have so far been shifted to safer places ahead of the approaching cyclonic storm 'Nisarga', officials said on Wednesday.
