Women’s Day 2025 History
The concept of International Women’s Day started from the European and North American labour movements in the early 20th century, and the modern day Women’s Day as we know it was declared by Vladimir Lenin.
The Socialist Party of America in New York City first organised Women’s Day on February 28, 1909. Next year, in 1910, German delegates at the International Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen proposed the idea of a ‘a special Women’s Day’ which should happen annually without a set date.
1911 saw commemorations for International Women’s Day all across Europe, following which, March 8 was declared as the official date in 1922 by Vladimir Lenin in order to honour the role of women during 1917’s Russian Revolution. After the United Nations promoted the holiday in 1977, it became a mainstream holiday around the world.
