She was reportedly taken without a warrant and without formal charges being laid. Several of her colleagues, including the company’s lawyer, Rita Ngabire, were also detained.
Pankaj Oswal alleges that his daughter’s detention is based on false accusations made by a former employee of the Oswal family, who had stolen valuable assets and taken a $200,000 loan with the family as guarantors. In response, Oswal filed an urgent appeal with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, urging the UN to investigate the case and intervene.
The Family’s Plea: Appeals and Human Rights Violations
Vasundhara’s mother, Radhika Oswal, issued a heart-rending public appeal to the Ugandan government, pleading for communication with her daughter. She expressed the deep emotional distress the family is enduring, stating, “This is every mother’s nightmare. My young daughter has been thrown into a foreign jail. She has been stripped of her basic human rights and her dignity. Vasundhara is an innocent bystander. All I want is her safety, and for her to be back in my arms.”
In addition, renowned human rights lawyer Cherie Blair has taken on Vasundhara’s case. In a statement, Blair described Vasundhara’s condition as “a vulnerable young woman, far from home, suffering through a traumatic experience.” Blair’s firm, Omnia Strategy, has filed an urgent appeal to the UN, seeking immediate action for her release and due legal process.
The family’s legal team has raised concerns about the inhumane conditions Vasundhara is reportedly being subjected to, including denial of access to vegetarian food, being moved between prisons without notice, and enduring unsanitary conditions. Her family took control of her official Instagram account to share updates on her harrowing experience, revealing details such as being forced to stay in a room filled with shoes for over 90 hours, and using unsanitary toilets.
