Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, passed away at the age of 86 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse. His trusted assistant, Shantanu Naidu, paid a heartfelt tribute to his mentor, reflecting on their unique bond and the impact Tata had on his life.
A Deeply Personal Farewell
In a moving LinkedIn post, Shantanu Naidu shared a picture of himself with Ratan Tata, expressing the profound loss he feels. He wrote, “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.” This heartfelt message highlights the deep connection they shared and the mentorship that shaped Naidu’s life and career.

A Friendship Built on Common Interests
Naidu and Tata’s friendship blossomed over their mutual love for dogs. In an interview with Brut India, Naidu described Tata as a ‘Millennial Dumbledore,’ praising his wisdom and his affinity for surrounding himself with younger people. This comparison to the beloved Harry Potter character emphasizes Tata’s nurturing spirit and the guidance he provided to those around him.
Support for Shantanu’s Initiatives
Tata’s support for Naidu was evident from the beginning of their relationship. Naidu, who joined Tata Elxsi as a design engineer in 2014, had previously started a project to make dog collars with reflectors for street dogs. When funding became tight, Naidu’s father encouraged him to reach out to Ratan Tata for help. Two months later, Tata responded, and Naidu met him in Mumbai. Impressed by Naidu’s initiative, Tata invited him to work alongside him.
Launching Goodfellows
In 2022, Naidu launched Goodfellows, a startup aimed at addressing the loneliness faced by senior citizens. This venture reflects Tata’s influence on Naidu, as it embodies the spirit of companionship and care that Tata championed throughout his life. Naidu’s efforts to help others, inspired by Tata’s mentorship, continue to carry forward the values instilled in him by the industrialist.
