Celebrated author Ruskin Bond has been hospitalised in Dehradun, as per an ANI report. Aged 91, he is currently undergoing treatment and is under medical supervision after he complained of discomfort in his leg. His family members reported that he had been facing difficulty in walking due to weakened legs.
As per the report, the globally acclaimed author is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a few days, his family revealed. Born in 1934, he is known for his exceptional flair with words and is extremely popular for his simple, nostalgic, and deeply evocative writing style. He has been honoured by both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the John Llewllyn Rhyz Prize.
This comes after he revealed that he could not collect his Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in person in 2021. ‘Ill health’ was cited as the primary reason for his absence. However, earlier this year, Ruskin Bond revealed in a media interaction that he had been facing difficulties walking, but he does enjoy a short stroll.
Ruskin Bond’s view on ‘fitness’
As per a July report, Ruskin Bond has never ‘thought much about fitness’. ‘The Room on the Roof’ author shared that he used to cycle everywhere, and is perhaps the secret behind his health. “I never did yoga, or followed any strict regimen,” Bond shared. However, at the age of 91, he ensures to get to up to write, but faces difficulty in walking at times. “When I was young, living to 60 was considered an achievement. So 91 feels like a bonus round,” he remarked.
In his younger years, the author shared that he used to “walk everywhere – hiking through hills and exploring towns.” It not only became cathartic, but his own way to ideate on stories. He added. “I begin my day early—around seven or eight—and write a couple of pages. If the weather is kind, I sit in the sun; otherwise, I find some shade. Nature is my daily joy—trees, birds, flowers.”

Over the decades of Ruskin Bond’s illustrious career, he has written over 500 short stories, several novels, essays, and children’s books. He first published his novel at the young age of 17 – ‘The Room on the Roof’. Winning the prestigious John Llewllyn Rhyz Prize, his work includes novels like Vagrants in the Valley”, “A Flight of Pigeons”, “The Blue Umbrella”. While his short stories include “The Night Train at Deoli,” “Time Stops at Shamli,” and “Delhi Is Not Far.” His poems and essays can be found in “Rain in the Mountains” and “A Book of Simple Living.”
