In a first-of-its-kind celebration, Weller Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, regarded as the world’s original and one of the most awarded wheated bourbon whiskeys, has now officially launched in India. Here’s what you need to know.
Crafted at Buffalo Trace Distillery, the longest continuously operating distillery in the United States, Weller embodies a century-plus legacy of innovation, quality, and the rich heritage of American whiskey-making. What sets Weller apart in a world dominated by rye-based bourbons is its use of wheat in the mash bill.
Because of this substitution, what we have is an exceptionally soft, smooth, and intricate flavour profile that has captured the attention of spirits enthusiasts globally. Two distinct expressions have launched in India – Weller Special Reserve and Weller 12-Year-Old, with the latter becoming the oldest age-stated bourbon currently available in the country.
All you need to know about Weller Bourbon whiskey
Named after William Larue Weller, the 19th-century bourbon pioneer who replaced rye with wheat, the Weller brand revolutionised American spirits by introducing a warmer, mellower taste without compromising elegance. Over time, Weller has amassed hundreds of international accolades for its deep, nuanced complexity.
Diego Bianchi, GM of Emerging Markets & Barrel Select at Sazerac Company, spoke of the brand’s Indian entry. “India is one of the world’s leading whisky markets and until now it has not had the opportunity to round out its category with a super-premium wheated bourbon. Weller is a bourbon unlike anything in the Indian market… We believe Weller will resonate with those seeking an unparalleled drinking experience—one that reflects quality, craftsmanship, and distinction.”

Weller 12-Year-Old
Declared the oldest age-stated bourbon in India, this expression is matured far longer than typical wheated bourbons. It offers a refined, velvety palate with a rich bronze hue—best savoured neat or on the rocks.
Weller Special Reserve
With its warm burnt-orange tone, this expression delivers a softer, sweeter profile, making it ideal for classic bourbon cocktails such as the Paper Plane.

Weller 12-Year-Old: Rs 5,400- 7,750 (RSP)
Prices may vary by state due to local taxes.
Why is Weller so highly regarded in the bourbon world?
American regulations stipulate that a “Kentucky Straight Bourbon” must contain at least 51% corn, be distilled in new charred oak barrels, made in the U.S., and aged at least two years. Weller exceeds these standards by incorporating wheat and extending the aging process, thereby achieving a richer and more refined taste than most of its peers.

It has been honoured with over 40 “Distillery of the Year” awards from prestigious magazines such as Whisky Advocate, Whisky Magazine, and Wine Enthusiast. Its George T. Stagg whiskey earned the title of “World Whiskey of the Year” in 2022, while its Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye ranked as the second-best whiskey globally that same year. In total, Buffalo Trace has secured over 1,000 awards across its extensive portfolio.
