Significance of Mahalaya Amavasya 2024
According to Hindu tradition, the souls of the departed dwell in Pitru Loka, a realm between heaven and earth. During Pitru Paksha, it is believed that these souls visit their descendants, who perform rituals to honor and express gratitude to their ancestors. These rituals, especially on Mahalaya Amavasya, are considered highly auspicious and are believed to help the souls attain peace and salvation.
Mahalaya Amavasya is also important for artisans creating the idol of Goddess Durga. A special ritual takes place where artisans give the final touch by painting the eyes of the deity, symbolising the completion of the idol.
