Every year the world celebrates International Yoga Day on June 21 to promote awareness of the various benefits of the age-old practice. However, this year, the day holds special significance as PM Modi is celebrating it at the UN headquarters in New York. It is important to note that International Yoga Day was introduced by PM Modi during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014.

Yoga is a priceless gift of ancient Indian tradition that must be cherished and passed on to future generations, Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said on Wednesday. The Raj Bhavan in Guwahati celebrated International Day of Yoga at its premises. The governor and his wife Anita Kataria along with officials and yoga enthusiasts from different organisations took part in the celebration. “Yoga is a precious gift from our ancestors that we must cherish and pass on to future generations. Let us embrace the practice of yoga as a life-giving prosperity to keep ourselves healthy,” Kataria said. It is a priceless gift of ancient Indian tradition, and it is a science-based spiritual discipline that focuses on achieving harmony between mind and body. It is the art and science of healthy living, he added. The governor also said that the day holds immense significance as it represents India's contribution to the world in achieving holistic well-being. Celebrating the day at Dhubri, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that yoga is India's gift to the world and the country is privileged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led the celebrations from the UN this year. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed asanas with hundreds on Wednesday as they led the International Day of Yoga celebrations in the state. While Patel took part in an International Day of Yoga programme at the Raj Bhavan here, Adityanath joined hundreds at Mahant Digvijaynath Smriti Sabhagar in Gorakhpur where he said yoga is a gift from India for humanity. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also took part in the programme at Raj Bhavan, which began with a video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official statement. It was a matter of pride for the entire country that yoga is being celebrated across the world, BJP national president JP Nadda said here on Wednesday. “It is a matter of great pride for the country that today 192 countries of the world are organising yoga programmes and the world is adopting the tradition of our country,” Nadda said addressing an event related to the International Day of Yoga. Nadda said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed the International Day of Yoga in the United Nations General Assembly, which was supported by all the countries. Since then, every year on June 21, yoga day is celebrated across the world, he said at the event held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium here. The BJP chief said the yoga day celebrations serve as a platform to raise awareness about its numerous benefits and promote its holistic approach to physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Union minister Kapil Patil on Wednesday participated in an International Yoga Day event held at Kalyan in Maharashtra's Thane district, in which more than 5,000 people took part, officials said. The programme was organised by the Panchayati Raj ministry, of which Patil is Minister of State, and the Thane Zilla Parishad. The Thane police also organised a yoga session for the members of its force, in which a number of police personnel, including officials, took part. At the Thane Civil Hospital, district civil surgeon Dr Kailas Pawar led the participants in the Yoga Day celebrations. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Madhavi Naik led the yoga enthusiasts in a morning session on the service road here, while the party's district unit chief and MLC Niranjan Davkhare took part in a yoga programme at the Mental Hospital. In Palghar, district collector Govind Bodke along with more than 3,000 school students participated in a yoga session at the ground of Aryan Education Society. (PTI)

Hardik Singh, Indian Men's Team Vice Captain, said, “At first when we were introduced to Yoga, we felt like it was too slow and it was not easy to get all the asanas right. Many of us preferred pumping weights in the gym to practicing an hour of Yoga. But eventually, we have come to realize that practicing Yoga has helped tremendously in the power of mindfulness.” “Today, Yoga has become an integral part of our regime. Personally, it helps me focus better and particularly after my injury during the World Cup, Yoga has helped me in the recovery process. Praising yoga as “truly universal,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined a crowd of diplomats and dignitaries for a morning yoga session on Wednesday at the United Nations and kicked off the public portion of his U.S. visit by calmly flexing India’s cultural reach. “When we do yoga, we feel physically fit, mentally calm and emotionally content. But it is not just about doing exercise on a mat,” Modi said. “Yoga is a way of life,” he added.

The overwhelming number of people of Indian origin mixed with a smattering of yoga enthusiasts of other nationalities formed a long queue outside the entrance amid tight security measures. Many people who arrived in the hope to get in without the pass given in advance were left disappointed. “I took a chance but it is alright.
