Aamir Khan has returned to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, which released in theatres on June 20, 2025, and the film has gotten off to a flying start. According to industry tracker Sacnilk.com, the film earned an estimated Rs 11.7 crore on its opening day, matching the debut figures of Khan’s last release Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022.

Despite mixed reactions to his previous film, Sitaare Zameen Par has received largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Touted as a “spiritual sequel” to Aamir’s acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, this new offering explores a sports-centric narrative while retaining its emotional core. Khan, known for blending commercial cinema with meaningful storytelling, plays the lead role alongside Genelia Deshmukh and a cast of ten promising young actors.

The film’s Day 1 occupancy rate stood at 21.43% across the Hindi belt, with evening and night shows witnessing the highest footfall. Considering the positive word of mouth and strong critical reception, trade analysts expect the film to perform even better over the weekend, possibly breaking past the sluggish box office run seen by Laal Singh Chaddha.

Interestingly, Taare Zameen Par had collected just Rs 2 crore on its first day back in 2007 but went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most emotionally resonant films. Now, Sitaare Zameen Par carries forward that emotional legacy while addressing themes of determination and inclusivity through sports.

The film is produced under the Aamir Khan Productions banner, with music composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

As Sitaare Zameen Par heads into its first weekend, the numbers so far indicate that audiences are ready to embrace Aamir Khan once again. Whether the film will sustain its momentum and surpass expectations remains to be seen, but its start is undeniably promising.
